The renovation of Loudoun County High School (LVHS) comprises approximately 195,000 SF. LVHS was originally constructed in 1962, expanded and renovated in the mid-1970s, and again in 1997. The project scope includes a number of additions totaling approximately 15,300 GSF including one-story additions for a fitness center and connecting corridor, stage storage and orchestra, dressing rooms, wrestling room with support areas and competition baseball and softball field press boxes.

The renovation scope will include expansion of auditorium restrooms, upgrades to the electrical switchgear, new internal communications system, replacement of exterior windows, replacement of older lighting, replacement of the gym bleachers and renovation of teacher workrooms.

Blacksburg, Virginia

After Hughes Group Architects delivered a resoundingly successful recreation facility addition, Virginia Tech commissioned Hughes Group to prepare a feasibility study for the renovation and modernization of War Memorial Gym.  The facility is at the heart of campus and the feasibility study revealed the potential for the existing facility to fulfill a new expanded role on campus.  The proposed design proposes a new entrance portico to provide University Recreation a new central entry location for greater control and higher visibility.  Thoughtful repurposing and reorganization of existing spaces such as racquetball courts and gymnastics spaces yield new fitness areas, weight training areas, and a climbing wall all within the footprint of the existing building.  The proposed design realizes the potential of existing facility with minimal fiscal and planning impacts to the University.

Fairfax, Virginia

The design strategy was to expand the facility on the north façade to create a new public face for the library and enhance its street presence while creating a new canopy entry element that facilitates covered pedestrian access from every part of the parking area. The interior was completely rehabilitated. A significant portion of the original building shell was saved and integrated into the new design as a part of the LEED Silver Certification. The structure was reinforced to current Structural standards and the Mechanical and Electrical systems were all replaced to meet current performance and LEED standards.

Sterling, Virginia

Hughes Group Architects designed a campus setting for the Transdulles Office Park.

Composed of six, 75,000 sq. ft. office buildings, the design responds to the marketplace in a flexible manner.  Each building is designed to support single or multiple tenant formats with first class lobbies, brick and glass facades, dynamic views and fitness facilities.

The distribution of voice, data, power, mechanical and lighting systems is designed for maximum efficiency and rapid change.

 

Dulles, Virginia

Our design houses the corporate headquarters for Tucon Construction and Southland Concrete.  The interior space plan is organized around team clusters for increased productivity and teamwork.  Through our fast track design/build management system, we completed the design, permitting and construction of this project in seven linear months (224 calendar days).  The completed facility has exceeded everyone’s expectations in terms of function, economy and form.

Dulles, Virginia

Our design houses the corporate headquarters for this computer-based information system company. The 80,000 SF facility includes administrative, manufactured and distribution functions with the capability for a rapid demand based expansion and consolidation strategy. The distribution of voice, data, power, mechanical systems and lighting is designed to maximize efficiency and adaptability.

Shepherdstown, West Virginia

While designed as an addition to the Butcher Athletic Center, the Wellness Center is an independent, multi-functional facility with an identity of its own.

Three key elements provide a well-balanced recreation program: the fitness zone, a new pool, and a multi-functional gymnasium. Viewable as a rotunda balcony, the fitness zone is located on the second level with visual access to all amenities in the structure as well as the campus beyond.

Also viewable from the rotunda, the gymnasium accommodates a wide variety of recreation programs such as basketball, volleyball and badminton. The gym also provides open space for large functions like career days and dances.

The swimming pool offers recreation, competition and instructional aquatic programs. The center’s locker rooms include unique changing areas, offering a more private atmosphere than traditional locker room layouts.

Every aspect of the de Laski Performing Arts Building at George Mason University is infused with a kinetic energy intended as a metaphor for music and bodies in motion.

The program includes a band rehearsal room with sound locks, a percussion rehearsal hall with sound locks, instrument storage, two dance studios, dance student locker rooms, and a gallery area.

A central circulation spine provides clarity to the internal circulation of the facility.  The spine serves as the main public lobby for receptions, gathering, and miscellaneous student activities on the north, and a dance gallery space on the south.  The new entrance faces one of the main pedestrian thoroughfares on the campus.

Manassas, Virginia

The Hylton Performing Arts Center is designed to provide Prince William County, the City of Manassas and George Mason University the ability to educate, entertain and enrich the lives of the citizens of the County and City and the surrounding region by providing venues and facilities for outstanding professional performances appealing to a broad audience, provide resources for community arts groups and educational opportunities.

The opera-style performance hall represents a benchmark in modern theater design in terms of compact layout and audience interaction. The tight horseshoe shape and three vertical tiers of boxes create a setting in which no seat is farther than 90 feet from the proscenium. The intimate space offers a place where every performance, no matter the content or style, allows the audience to be fully immersed in the action. The ‘family boxes’ reinvent traditional seating that accommodates from 2 to 59 people and are structured to encourage the attendance of families with children and varied student groups.

The team undertook a comprehensive planning effort that included a needs assessment, a review of existing community and campus arts organizations, an attendee PRISM market study for the entire county, a building program, site planning options, preliminary cost estimates for construction and long-term operations, a business plan, a memorandum of understanding with the three entities, and a detailed management program for the operation of the facility.
