One approach is investing in efficient, engaging, and inclusive facilities that benefit the entire campus and community. Well-designed multipurpose facilities can attract more users and increase participation by offering a range of activities and events.

Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) is a perfect example of this trend. Located roughly 30 miles northeast of Atlanta, it’s a metropolitan college with nearly 12,000 students. Recently, the school started construction on a new 72,000-square-foot convocation center.

Working with SSOE Group, Little designed the three-story facility as a versatile space for students, faculty, staff, and the community to gather. It will serve as a hub for recreation and events, even allowing GGC to expand its athletic program with men’s and women’s basketball. Additionally, the facility features a main event space with seating for 3,100 people, a presidential suite, and a student health, wellness, and recreation area. The center’s flexible-use rooms will support students through formal and informal learning and collaboration.

“The Georgia Gwinnett College Convocation Center will be more than a building,” stated GGC President Jann L. Joseph during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony. “It will be the focal point where memories are made, successes celebrated, dreams realized, and fitness and healthy lifestyles are cultivated on a daily basis.”
