“The design of our recreation facility was a major league home run!” – Doug Kuykendall, Director of Campus Recreation

The original facility was a series of windowless masonry boxes with a labyrinth of endless corridors with no sense of orientation or control. This oppressive atmosphere was the very inspiration for the design that followed.

The “Breakthrough Concept” literally broke through the massive facility with a sun filled atrium which serves as a new “Main Street” bridging the gap between the existing and new facility elements. An interior palate of natural materials and vibrant colors was applied to both new and existing facility elements to unify the entire composition.

Sustaining continual operations during the expansion and renovation process required careful scheduling and construction sequencing. Temporary “Swing Space” configurations were an integral part of the planning and execution process.
